A chapbook project for school. The project was to design a 16 page chapbook, using text written by Daniel Updike, a typographer. The designer is supposed to create a cover that reflects the contents of the book and also typeset the book properly. Basically just practice for book design on a small scale. The contents are about the seven champions of typography; spacing, leading, indentation, ink, paper, imposition and the seventh being the designer. So I basically created a system of defining all those qualities on the cover, using lines and information to display each champion. Was a fun little project. I’m sure the terms are vague to everyone but designers and typographers. Hopefully someone finds it helpful or interesting :)

Hi!
It looks very natural.
I used a part of it for my deviation - here [link]
Thanks for a great job!

oh yea. this cover actually was turned down by my professor.. he loved the look, but said it was fussy. I agree with him, but the next cover i made, I didnt feel worked as well with the concept. as far as the body copy, yea the margins are tight on the spine, I guess I was trying to make sure that hte exterior margins were large enough to create a nice border around the copy so that stuff behind the book, whereever the reader is doesnt distract from the read. I guess I choice to make the interior margins small seeing that it was only 16 pages and it could be spread completely flat and there would be enough room from edge to edge of the copy.. does look a bit off, but yea I guess those were my reasons. But I agree with you now, looking over it again, I think it could move out a few picas and work wonderfully. Thanks for the tip

you talking about the spacing between lines or between the paragraphs. the line leading is i think 8/12. so 1 over the 3rd :) but i do think the paragraph spacing could be a big tighter. I think the space in the page is too large there. Though I made this 3 years ago, I should be seeing the flaws in stuff like that now. If I can find the files I might just rework it!

Thanks for the tips. Good constructive comment.

Yea, thats some good work there~

But there's still stuff to look for if you want to have it looking the best and being readable~
Margins on the inside looks a little tight, and quite generous leading for the body copy (which looks a little strange at places)
Page number on the inside of the margin?
Crazy tracking for the title, but I think thats more of a design chocie - not too picky on that =p

Don't get me wrong, I like what you've done with the design, and its wonderful to see. But there's just so much that can go wrong when we deal with type, just thought I would pass on what people have told me :D
